Chthonic Theater (pronounced thon-ik) is an Oakland-based performing and visual arts collective. Founded by The T Sisters (Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen) and Analisa Svehaug, our group is based out of the eclectic neighborhood of Jingletown in Oakland.
We collaborate with and support local artists through regular variety shows, musical theater productions, parades and more. Our events and productions incorporate music, dance, theater, and written word, as well as visual transformation of space through costuming and set design.
What is Chthonic?
The word chthonic means literally “in, under, or beneath the earth” and is often associated with the feminine. Chthonic also often connotes the creative unconscious.
Variety Shows
Every month, Chthonic Theater hosts a Variety Show where performing artists of all kinds are encouraged to share their talents. Past shows have presented music, theater, dance, comedy, poetry, rap, magic, and improv. Each Variety Show includes a bill of curated acts, and we invite artists to contact us about performing in the future. Open to the public, Variety Shows happen frequently throughout the year, so become a fan on Facebook to stay updated! Learn more >>
